Fraunhofer-GesellschaftThe Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD) combines the advantages of two strong decentralized research organizations – Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Leibniz-Gemeinschaft – with the synergies of a centralized organization. The aim: To be the world’s most powerful provider for applied research, development, and innovation in the micro- and nanoelectronics sector. Through their close internal links as FMD, the eleven institutes within the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics and the two Leibniz institutes FBH and IHP are able to provide tailor-made technology and systems solutions along the entire value-chain to a large range of industrial clients. Especially SMEs and Startups can profit from a broad and easy access to high-technologies, and the possibility to use Europe’s largest machine- and technology pool for their new product developments.
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) sponsors the set-up of the FMD with around 350 million euros – mostly for the modernization and extension of the equipment in the institutes.
With this sponsoring the BMBF wants to strengthen the innovation capability of Germany’s and Europe’s semiconductor and electronics industry. Especially the world-wide competitiveness is supported by the largest investment in research equipment since the German reunification.
