Day after day we read and hear in the media about natural disasters, accidents and terrorist attacks. Such news items are a stark reminder of how vulnerable our society is. The objective of safety researchers is to provide people and the environment with the best possible protection from threats. They adopt a long-term approach in order to gain control of all the different phases that occur in a disaster, focusing on early detection, prevention, direct protection and quickly overcoming the consequences of a disastrous event.

That is why the Fraunhofer Group for Defense and Security VVS has developed the position paper "Rise of Intelligent Systems in Military Weapon Systems", which represents the perspective of Fraunhofer VVS on the current state of the art, examines benefits and risks and presents a framework concept for explainable and controllable AI.

RTO’s join forces for the European Defense Fund

Shortly before the start of the first European defense research program, which the new EU Commission will launch in 2020 as part of the European Defense Fund, Europe's leading research organizations are joining forces in a new network. The European Defense Research and Innovation Network (EDRIN), headed by Fraunhofer and TNO, will now begin its work in order to be able to provide strategic and content-related support for research policy topics in Brussels and to give RTO’s a strong voice.
