Fraunhofer Radio Technology becomes part of the worldwide Telecom Infra Project (TIP)

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is an industry association for the development of Open Solutions, in which all well-known players of the worldwide telecommunications industry are represented. The aim is to give everyone in the world access to the Internet. Fraunhofer FIT's "Wireless Backhaul" (WiBACK) radio relay technology will be a key component of TIP’s OpenCellular project for bringing the Internet to remote, sparsely populated regions.
Photostructurable pastes for 5G applications

For many years now, miniaturization has been the main driver of the electronics industry. This is particularly true for ceramic-based circuit boards, which have properties that make them especially suitable for high-frequency circuits. Increasingly demanding technical requirements have exposed the limits of the classic thick-film technologies used for the production of circuit-board conduc-tors. Now, however, a new generation of thick-film pastes and their photolitho-graphic structuring enable the manufacturing of extremely high-resolution thick-film structures necessary for 5G applications. Moreover, this process is suitable for mass production and industrial applications while maintaining low investment costs and only minimally extending production times.
Machines communicate by using infrared light
A distinguishing feature of industry 4.0 is the large amount of data generated when production processes are linked. Previously, data streams were sent primarily by cable, but this method is cumbersome when used in industrial processes and the cables are also prone to wear and tear. Transferring data using a wireless LAN is not a viable alternative because it is not fast enough. To solve this problem, engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS have developed a module that transmits data rapidly and securely using infrared light.
Visible light communication – High speed internet from the ceiling lamp
In the future, people will be able to surf the web using light – quickly, inexpensively, and entirely without radio communication – thanks to a technology Fraunhofer scientists have been researching for years: visible light communication (VLC). This makes commercially available LEDs a viable alternative to conventional wireless network access in situations where radio communication is not desired, or to give people relief from electromagnetic rays and electric smog.
ReICOvAir – Reliable Industrial Communication Over the Air
Replacing wired connections with radios and providing reliable over the air connections for advanced manufacturing and processing systems is the vision of the Celtic-Plus project ReICOvAir for the near future of Industry 4.0.
Using ReICOvAir’s solutions more flexibility in the deployment of machinery can be reached allowing data connections for formerly unreachable spots with an overall reduction of installation costs.
