Dr. Deberson Ferreira Jesus received a Ph.D. in Political Sociology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) with an internship as research in the field of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick (UK). Additionally, he received two undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Sociology from the Federal University of Mato Grosso in Brazil. His research has investigated aspects of transnational governance of the commodities supply chain through sustainability standards and certifications.

Since 2008, he is a staff member (currently, manager of International Relations) at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, and associate researcher at the Institute of Research in Risk and Sustainability (IRIS) since 2013. Additionally, he is a researcher at the NGO Ethical Sugar since 2015. Since 2010, Dr. Jesus has been studying the field of policies, social conditions, and governance in the global system of biofuels, focusing primarily on sugarcane.

As an expert in the sugar/energy industries, he holds membership in both Ethical Sugar and IRIS. He is a regular contributor to publications within the sugar/biofuel sectors, with particular attention to the socio-environmental governance, risks and impacts thereof. He has also authored research papers about the multiple and complex social links between risks, governance challenges, and sustainability strategies, especially through transnational certifications.
