RSB CORSIA Certification

RSB’s CORSIA Certification is for use by feedstock producers, refineries and traders globally to certify CORSIA-eligible Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

The Standard was recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in December 2020 and specifies requirements for operators along the supply chain to produce SAF that is eligible under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and complies with RSB’s sustainability requirements – thus allowing aviation leaders to make powerful claims on GHG reductions and other important sustainability aspects such as food security, environmental protection and human rights.

Through the RSB CORSIA Standard, we support the sector leaders to demonstrate they are at the forefront of driving sustainability and decarbonisation of this vital industry.

The RSB CORSIA Certification enables the certification of SAF made from:

  • Primary biomass (e.g. oil or sugar crops, energy grasses)
  • Biomass from end-of-life products and production residues (e.g. Used Cooking Oil, agricultural and forestry residues, animal fats)
  • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

EXAMPLE CLAIMS

  • RSB ICAO CORSIA SAF
  • RSB ICAO CORSIA Compliant
  • Additional Claims
  • RSB ICAO CORSIA SAF

    Airline claim.

  • RSB ICAO CORSIA Compliant

When forwarding RSB CORSIA certified feedstock or SAF to the next operator.

  • Additional Claims

RSB CORSIA certified SAF enables further claims around achieving a minimum of 50% GHG reductions on the core GHG LCA, environmental protection, food security and human rights, as indicated in RSB’s comprehensive Principles & Criteria which define best practice for sustainability along the supply chain.

RSB is committed to supporting certified supply chain operators and airline end-users to develop additional sustainability claims and communications that can be used with consumers, stakeholders, and in the media.

In order to ensure that fuel production can demonstrate real greenhouse gas emission reductions while not contributing to issues like deforestation, global hunger, ecological breakdown and more, the RSB has developed the most robust and credible standard for the production of fuels anywhere in the world.

RSB’s CORSIA Certification describes how to produce SAF from bio-based and advanced feedstocks in a way that enhances long-term environmental and social outcomes, and that is eligible under the CORSIA requirements.

RSB’s CORSIA Certification is composed of a variety of procedures and methodologies that describe how to produce and trade bio-based and advanced SAF.

RSB’s approach to sustainability is anchored in our 12 Principles for the sustainable production of fuels and products.

Working with the RSB Standard

Risk-based approach: not every document applies to every producer and by completing the self-risk assessment and screening exercise before the certification process, your context-specific sustainability requirements will be set out.

Which documents apply to me?

Depending on your certification scope and the type of operator you are, you will only need to work with some of these documents. The specific sustainability requirements that apply to your operation will be clarified when you complete your Screening Exercise.

Certification Process

The full certification process, including applicable documents, is available here.

In brief, the steps are as follows:

Step 1: Apply for certification here. Following the submission of your application, you will be sent all the documentation to prepare for certification via email. Within 4 business days of your application, a public comments period will be opened with details of your operation, shared on RSB’s website and with RSB’s stakeholders.

Step 2: Select the certification body (CB) that will conduct your audit and agree on an audit date. Click here for contacts of RSB accredited CBs.

Step 3: Prepare for your audit. Click here for a list of suggested activities in preparation for your audit. Please contact your sector lead should you need any support.

Step 4: Complete your audit and receive your RSB certificate. You are now able to make RSB claims on your CORSIA-eligible SAF.
