MEASURING OUR IMPACT

Continuous monitoring of our impacts.

The RSB has to ensure that its desired long-term goals will be achieved. The RSB Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) System is designed to measure this success in biomass supply chains.

The RSB monitors its performance by processing data collected among its certified operators through a set of “outcome indicators”, which cover all the environmental, social and economic issues and the context in which operators work.

The measured impacts are compared to the expected results and outcomes, as defined in the initial RSB “Theory of Change”, which describes the short-term, mid-term and long-term effects the RSB is expected to drive in terms of contributing to developing a sustainable bio-based economy.

Results from the M&E system feed into the continuous improvement of the RSB Standards, Policies, Guidance and Tools of the certification system, as well RSB strategies and activities.

Committed to transparency, the RSB prepares its M&E reports annually and circulates them among RSB stakeholders for comments and further improvements to the system.

  • Public System Report

The Public System Report summarises how our RSB Monitoring & Evaluation system is working. It describes the short-term, mid-term and long-term effects the RSB is expected to drive in terms of contributing to developing a sustainable, bio-based economy.

  • Outcome Evaluation Report

Outcome evaluation reports are systematic, objective, in-depth assessments of the short-term and medium-term results or effects of the implementation of a standards system. These reports seek to shed light on the extent to which the standards system’s desired changes are occurring. This report contains outcomes for our first outcome evaluation.

  • Stakeholder Participation

Public System Reports as well as Outcome Evaluation Reports are updated annually and circulated among RSB stakeholders for comments and further improvements to the system.
Irrespective of the consultation schedule, comments, questions or complaints about the RSB Monitoring & Evaluation System may be submitted at any time.

RSB & US Corn Stover Protocol

The RSB worked with partners in the USA to develop a protocol to assist auditors and producers in assessing the volumes of corn stover that can be removed from fields without having a detrimental impact on the ecosystem. Stakeholders involved in the development of the protocol included the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), NRCS Soil Science Division, the USDA Agricultural Research Service as well as US-based industrial and NGO participants.
