Scotland’s recently-published Hydrogen Policy Statement sets an ambition to become a leading hydrogen nation, generating 5GW of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, or enough to power the equivalent of 1.8 million homes.  To support this, £100m will be pumped into the hydrogen sector over the next five years, helping to drive a green recovery and Scotland’s just transition to net zero.

During 2020 the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise commissioned Arup and E4tech to carry out a Hydrogen Assessment to deepen the evidence base informing policy-making on hydrogen. A key part of the Assessment was the evaluation of the economic benefit of distinct viable scenarios for hydrogen deployment in Scotland. E4tech led the economic impact assessment and supported Arup in the development of these scenarios.

The study adds to E4tech’s substantial body of work on hydrogen value chains and builds directly on previous work to analyse the Scottish hydrogen landscape and potential.
