Vienna International doubles the number of natural gas airside cars, reducing CO2 emissions by 30 percent
Volkswagen Caddy EcoFuel cars at Vienna International Airport
Fri 27 Nov 2009 – Flughafen Wien, the operator of Vienna International Airport, has purchased 37 new natural gas-operated cars to add to the 37 already in the fleet. With a range of 440km, the cars are used by handling agents and loading supervisors as mobile offices in airside operations and each come equipped with a laptop computer and printer. In comparison with petrol-driven versions, the Caddy EcoFuel natural gas car emits 30% less CO2, 85% less nitrogen oxide and up to 90% less carbon monoxide (CO), as well as costing roughly 40% less to run per kilometre. In addition, there are no sulphur dioxide or soot particle emissions as is found with diesel vehicles.
The airport operator now has one of the largest natural gas car fleets in Austria. Gerhard Schmid, a member of the Management Board, said: “Flughafen Wien is well aware of its responsibility for the environment. The vehicles will cut fine dust emissions to a minimum. At the same time, the use of vehicles with environmentally friendly technologies provides us with a cost advantage.”
Johann Wimmer, Brand Manager for Volkswagen utility vehicles at Porsche Austria, which supplied the cars, added: “Over the past 18 months, the Caddy EcoFuel has proven to be a reliable and economical partner – day in and day out, under all wind and weather conditions. We are pleased that Vienna International Airport has again decided in favour of the Caddy EcoFuel.”
The cars come with security equipment, around 3.2 cubic metres of loading space and a 500kg payload.
