IATA promotes aviation environment lead Paul Steele to head up the association's advocacy activities
Mon 15 Apr 2013 – As part of a wide-ranging restructuring of its divisions and management structure, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has promoted its Director of Aviation Environment, Paul Steele (right), to Senior Vice President, Member and External Relations (MER). The division will primarily take responsibility for IATA’s advocacy activities. Steele is currently responsible for guiding the association’s environment strategy worldwide and is also Executive Director of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), a cross-industry body that promotes sustainable aviation. Prior to joining IATA in December 2007, he served as Chief Operating Officer of WWF International, with previous senior management roles with the Virgin Trading Company, the Hilton Hotel Group and Pepsi Cola.
Despite his new responsibilities, Steele is expected to retain his environmental role for the immediate future. “The new MER department that Paul will be leading includes environment, so continuity is the name of the game. Paul will continue to be heavily involved in environmental affairs,” said an IATA spokesman.
Under the organisational restructuring, initiated as part of a strategy review, IATA’s regional operations will be consolidated from seven to five, with North and South America consolidated into an Americas region based in Miami, with Africa and Middle East North Africa combined into one region to be known as Africa and Middle East.
Current Senior Vice President, Member and Government Relations, Thomas Windmuller, will lead the newly-created division Airports, Passenger and Cargo Services (APCS). Windmuller has also served as Director of ATAG.
