Thu 20 Oct 2011 – A new initiative has been launched by airport industry body Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific in which airports in the region are invited to participate in the Green Airports Award. The objective, it says, is to promote environmental best practices and recognise ACI airport members who have achieved “outstanding accomplishments” in their environmental projects. The awards for 2011 will be presented at the ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly to be held in Singapore in May 2012.

“Environmental issues are of growing importance around the world and therefore our Regional Office has decided to launch this campaign to promote environmental best practices,” commented Maggie Kwok, Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific. “One of the ACI missions is to promote professional excellence in airport management and operations. I strongly encourage airports in the region to participate in this campaign and make your projects well-known to the aviation community.”

Criteria for the awards will be based on environmental benefit, innovation, effectiveness, applicability and cost effectiveness. The deadline for applications is 16 January 2012.

In addition to Kwok, the panel of judges includes Leonie Dobbie, Head of Sustainable Aviation and Airports at consultancy WSP, and also Administrator of ACI Europe’s Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme; Elizabeth Leavitt, Director, Aviation Planning and Environmental Services at the Port of Seattle, and  also Chair of the ACI World Environment Standing Committee; Gap-Cheol Park, Environment Manager, Korea Airports Corporation, and Chair of ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Environment Liaison Group; and Xavier Oh, Senior Manager Environment and ICAO Liaison, ACI World.
