Virgin Atlantic gets its sustainability message across to passengers with onboard animation video | Virgin Atlantic

Fri 13 Jun 2014 – Virgin Atlantic customers can now enjoy a whistle-stop tour of the airline’s ‘Change is in the Air’ sustainability programme in a light-hearted animation video narrated by Sir Richard Branson. Now available to watch on board, the animation uses thirsty microbes, dancing horses, baby orang-utans and pilots dressed in plastic bottles to demonstrate how the airline is reducing its environmental impact and supporting communities in need. The video also encourages passengers to do their bit by, for example, packing lighter, offsetting the emissions from their flight and putting loose change in the on-board ‘Change for Children’ envelopes.

Among the initiatives outlined in the video is the pioneering work on sustainable fuels in conjunction with LanzaTech, which uses microbes to convert waste gas from industrial plants to ethanol and aviation fuel. Also highlighted are the airline’s various recycling schemes, such as the small sponges from inflight headsets being reused as the surface for an equestrian centre and old blankets that have ended up protecting orphaned orang-utans.

“This new animation provides a taster of some of the many environmental and community activities in which we’re involved in what we hope is a fun and accessible way,” said Dr Emma Harvey, Head of Sustainability at Virgin Atlantic. “We hope it tempts some of our customers to find out more through our website, news and reports, and also encourages them to get involved.”
