Student teams from more than 60 countries take on the Airbus 'Fly Your Ideas' environmental challenge | Airbus Fly Your Ideas
Tue 2 Dec 2008 – Teams representing more than 900 university students from over 60 countries have registered for the Airbus ‘Fly Your Ideas’ competition that aims to generate ideas to help shape the future of the air transport industry and deliver further reductions in the environmental impact of aviation. Entries for the competition closed yesterday and a six-month process now begins to find the winning project, to be announced at the next Paris Air Show in June 2009.

Students from India and China have signed up in the greatest numbers, with the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, France and South Africa providing the next largest volume of entrants. Teams from Afghanistan, Nigeria, Cyprus, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean have also joined, ensuring the competition’s global intentions.

Proposed projects do not have to be technical in nature or scope, and could include ideas such as new materials, alternative energy, aircraft design concepts, operational performance, manufacturing and assembly, or business performance.

The competition process began with the initial registration process, completion of an online quiz and the submittal of a Round 1 project proposal detailing the team’s project objectives, outline and methodology. In the second phase, up to 100 teams will be selected to further develop their projects and prepare a project submission accompanied by a short video presentation. Five finalist teams will then be chosen to develop their project presentations for a live final in Paris next June.

The winning teams will be judged by a panel of Airbus representatives, industry leaders and eco-efficiency experts, and will be awarded their prizes during the Paris Air Show on June 19. A first place prize of €30,000 ($38,000) will go to the team “whose ideas demonstrate the greatest short or long term potential of reducing the air transport sector’s impact on the environment”.
