Wed 9 May 2012 – Leisure carrier Monarch Airlines has signed a five-year commitment with Pratt & Whitney for the engine manufacturer’s EcoFlight Solutions fuel conservation programme. The airline has already been using Pratt & Whitney’s EcoPower engine wash service since 2011 and the EcoFlight team has already commenced working with Monarch to develop and implement fuel savings and emissions reduction solutions. Offered in collaboration with fuel conservation programme provider Flight Sciences International and fuel efficiency software company Aviaso, EcoFlight Solutions can typically save an airline 3 to 8 per cent in fuel costs annually, claims Pratt & Whitney.

“In the last 15 years we have improved our fuel efficiency significantly,” commented Mick Adams, Monarch’s Managing Director. “We are working towards a goal of improving our fuel efficiency by an additional 3 to 5 per cent by the end of 2015, and EcoFlight Solutions will help us achieve that goal.”

The airline operates a fleet of 32 aircraft on scheduled and charter flights to more than 50 destinations worldwide from a number of UK airports and is also a key supplier of aircraft to the tour operating industry.

Mary Canty, General Manager of Pratt & Whitney Line Maintenance Services, said the fuel conservation programme was an elegant solution for airlines committed to reducing their carbon footprint while realising significant cost savings.

Flight Sciences has been involved in helping airlines worldwide since 1992 to reduce their fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The company’s website claims its conservation programmes have saved airlines over 96 million tonnes of CO2 to date.

Aviaso develops complex operational software products exclusively for the aviation industry, covering fuel efficiency, EU ETS and aviation reporting, and crew communication. Last month, the company signed an agreement with LOT Polish Airlines for the deployment of its software to provide a full range of data analysis, reporting and monitoring tools. LOT, too, is looking to reduce its fuel consumption and emissions footprint by around 3 to 5 per cent annually.

Aviaso’s software includes more than 100 ready-made analysis reports that allow an airline to understand and identify potential fuel savings and then monitor the various fuel saving initiatives for each and every flight.
