Amsterdam Schiphol and KLM start sustainable ground vehicle project using 100 per cent biodiesel

Fri 16 Sept 2011 – Around 40 ground vehicles operated by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and KLM are being switched over the next four months to run on 100 per cent biodiesel sourced from used cooking oil supplied by SkyNRG, the company that also provided jet biofuel for the recent commercial flights undertaken by KLM, Finnair and Thomson Airways. Both the airport and KLM are investing efforts in introducing more sustainable transport vehicles at Schiphol. Although a number of electrically-powered vehicles are already in use, this is not currently suitable for all types of vehicles and so biodiesel presents a sustainable alternative.
“By using 100% biodiesel in our vehicles we are injecting a powerful impetus in the advancement of sustainable enterprise at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol,” said Ad Rutten, Executive Vice President & COO of Schiphol Group. “We have formulated the ambition of running carbon-neutral operations by 2012 and investment in sustainable mobility is one way in which we will achieve this.”
The vehicles that will run on biodiesel include tractors and catering, bird control, lease and delivery vans. If the pilot proves successful then more vehicles will be switched to the sustainable fuel.
