FAA Excellence in Research Award goes to PARTNER programme leader Ian Waitz

Fri 18 July 2008 – Dr Ian Waitz, Director of the Partnership for AiR Transportation Noise and Emissions Reduction (PARTNER) has received the Federal Aviation Administration’s Excellence in Aviation Research Award for his ongoing, critical research on aviation’s impact on the environment. The award is presented to individuals whose research contributions result in a significantly safer, more efficient national airspace system.
In addition to directing the PARTNER programme office, Waitz is lead investigator for a number of its research projects including Valuation and Trade-offs of Policy Options, the Energy Policy Act Study and Alternative Fuels. He is particularly involved in developing the Aviation Environmental Portfolio Management Tool, a comprehensive software tools suite that will allow for thorough assessment of aviation environmental effects. Waitz is also head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Aeronautics and Astronautics Department.
The award was presented by Dr Lourdes Maurice, FAA Chief Scientist for the Environment, and Dr Barry Scott, FAA Office of Research and Technology Development Director. Other FAA representatives at the ceremony included Amy Corbett, New England Regional Administrator, and Mark Rumizen, Aviation Fuels Specialist.
Headquartered at MIT, PARTNER is a leading aviation cooperative research organization and an FAA/NASA/Transport Canada-sponsored Center of Excellence, which fosters breakthrough technological, operational, policy and workforce advances for the betterment of mobility, economy, national security and the environment.
It comprises nine universities and 53 advisory board members representing aerospace manufacturers, airlines, airports, national, state and local government, professional and trade associations, non-governmental organizations and community groups.
