The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/what-is-the-paris-agreement#:~:text=The%20Paris%20Agreement%20opened%20for,global%20emissions)%20had%20been%20met.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aim to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, are fundamental to maintaining human welfare. Already, we are becoming too familiar with the impacts of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changing climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 increased wildfires, melting glaciers, an ever-growing number of record-breaking weather events, and so forth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most exciting takeaway from the last five years is that the global transition to a low carbon future is underway. The Paris Agreement set the foundation for countries to channel climate action in a coordinated way to maximize benefits for the health of people and the planet. But more needs to be done, and faster. The 2020s is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/report\/achieving-global-climate-goals-by-2050-actionable-opportunities-for-this-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decisive decade for climate action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and all efforts need to be greatly accelerated to put us on a path to achieve the Paris goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another bright spot is the forthcoming re-engagement from the United States. The absence of leadership from the U.S. over the last four years was a significant setback but we\u2019re optimistic about the action that will come under President-elect Biden\u2019s administration. Certainly, the outcome of the Senate runoff elections in January will have a big influence on the pace of U.S. climate activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are notable achievements from the first five years of the Paris Agreement and key opportunities for further action:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Net-zero emissions moved from concept to commonplace\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2019\/09\/what-does-net-zero-emissions-mean-6-common-questions-answered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">net zero emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> targets were a concept. At the time, no country had committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Today, not only is it a reality, it is commonplace. Nearly all the G7 countries and the G20 members have net-zero targets, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, China, and the EU. However, the U.S. stands out for not having yet made a net-zero commitment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the U.S. making its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-54858638\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticipated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> net-zero commitment, generally, the timelines for all commitments need to be ramped up. Additionally, we need more accountability and transparency by countries as they work to achieve their commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stronger climate plans from 151 countries and counting<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many countries have confirmed their intent to submit stronger climate plans by the end of this year. These plans, referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process\/the-paris-agreement\/nationally-determined-contributions\/ndc-spotlight#:~:text=NDCs%20are%20national%20climate%20plans,the%20concept%20of%20national%20determination.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NDCs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can serve as templates for economic stimulus packages, guiding investments in the jobs, businesses, and clean air of the future. So far, a majority of these commitments have come from the more climate-vulnerable countries, such as the Marshall Islands, Jamaica, and Rwanda. Countries that emit large amounts of GHGs need to join these leaders and commit to stronger climate plans too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Financing the climate transition<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having global financial systems aligned to support the low carbon economy transition is critical and important progress has been made. In the private sector, leading investors are now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/climate-change-has-now-reached-a-tipping-point-among-global-investors-2020-09-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climate change and climate policy. From the public sector, 150 national climate investment plans worth more than $25 trillion are expected in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-related stimulus is a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/report\/covid-19-and-climate-action-understanding-key-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opportunity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to align economic recovery with climate action to concurrently drive GDP growth and emissions reductions. Additionally, the divestment of fossil fuels must accelerate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Exponential growth of renewable energy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of renewable sources of power has steadily grown since 2015 and renewables continue to displace fossil fuels. Renewable sources of power accounted for 26% of global electricity generated in 2015. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewables are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/renewables-2020\/renewable-electricity-2#abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poised for record expansion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021, with almost 218 GW becoming operational \u2013 a 10% increase from 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Renewable electricity net capacity additions by technology, main and accelerated cases, 2013-2022\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23357\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23357\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-23357 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IEA-Chart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IEA-Chart.png 850w, https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IEA-Chart-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.climateworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IEA-Chart-768x380.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: IEA, Renewable electricity net capacity additions by technology, main and accelerated cases, 2013-2022, IEA, Paris<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Looking ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned for November 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COP26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the annual UN Climate Change conference, will be a pivot point in the global climate framework \u2014 it\u2019s when the final touches on the Paris Agreement should be done (e.g. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2019\/12\/article-6-paris-agreement-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and new initiatives are incorporated, like sectoral approaches with non-state actors. Another important area to monitor closely is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/topics\/science\/workstreams\/global-stocktake-referred-to-in-article-14-of-the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global stocktake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; an assessment of the world\u2019s collective progress in meeting the Paris climate goals. The first global stocktake will take place in 2023 and will happen every five years thereafter.
