Mon 29 Sept 2014 – For the tenth consecutive year, Air France-KLM has been ranked a sector leader in the latest Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which analyses the economic, environmental and social performance of major companies worldwide. The airline group was listed as a leader in the Airlines category and was also industry group leader in the broader Transport category, which covers all modes of transportation. LATAM Airlines Group, which comprises LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines, becomes the first in the Airline category from the Americas to join the index. In the Aerospace and Defence sector, aircraft manufacturer Embraer has been listed for the fifth year in a row. Over 2,500 leading companies around the world are invited to join the index and this year 319 companies were selected.

“This recognition rewards the commitment of the Group, which every day aims to reconcile economic performance, social progress and environmental awareness,” said Alexandre de Juniac, Chairman and CEO of Air France-KLM.

Added KLM CEO Camiel Eurlings: “We take pride in this achievement, which confirms that we take our responsibility with regard to environmental and societal impact seriously.”

The airline group said it was concentrating on four main sustainability issues: reducing its environmental impact, integrating sustainable development into its products and services, promoting a responsible human resources policy and contributing to the development of the territories where the group operates.

Commenting on LATAM’s entry into the index, the group’s CEO, Enrique Cueto, said: “It is the result of years of work, and it demonstrates that we are making progress on the right path to where we want to go, which is to be among the three best airlines in the world. Being part of this index confirms the commitment with our stakeholders towards being a more transparent and responsible company in the economic, environmental and social aspects.”

In the Environmental category, the group achieved the industry’s highest performance worldwide in the areas of Operational Eco-Efficiency and Climate Strategy/Climate Governance, two of the four criteria evaluated, which it attributes to having one of the lowest rates of CO2 emissions per passenger-mile. The group also points to the completion of its first sustainability report, released earlier this year.

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer appeared in DJSI analysis back in 2009 as a ‘sector mover’ and the following year was listed in the index and rated Gold Class for the best performance in its sector. It became sector leader in the Aerospace & Defence category in 2011 and since then has been listed in DJSI World, and for the second year in a row joins the DJSI Emerging Markets Index.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the first global index to track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide based on an analysis of financially material economic, environmental and social factors. It is published by Zurich-based RobecoSAM, an investment specialist focused on sustainability investing.
